President's Greeting (July 01, 2005)
I am excited! GMU Black Alumni and Friends, I am excited about the possibilities and opportunities before
us. I encourage everyone to take ownership of this growing chapter. Let’s consider how we can make great
things out of the connections we have with one another, the University and its students. There is no other
time but now to make the presence and voice of Black alumni, friends and students prevalent at George Mason
University.
The continued success of the Black Alumni Chapter (BAC) will be measured by our collective efforts, which
take many forms. It is our intention to share the opportunity and weight of leadership. Our goals and
objectives can be fully realized when we commit to the belief that yes we are all leaders. In fact, we are
"community builders."
In our brief history, chapter membership has provided great leadership on many professional levels; this
includes advancing relationships and collaborations within the alumni association and university
administration. Many of us have proven our commitment, specifically to the chapter and GMU Black students,
with our time and financial gift giving.
There are so many ways to lead in the BAC. I would ask you to commit to giving time to the Black Alumni
Chapter by volunteering on the programs and events committee, representing BAC on one of the university
alumni association’s committee, being a speaker or moderator for a student-coordinated program, hosting a
gathering of alumni, showing up to a Mason Spirit event, participating in a signature student event sponsored
by or for Black students at Mason, or taking the lead in addressing an identified community need or concern,
or making a financial gift to the chapter to support its scholarship giving and operating costs. There are so
many opportunities to lead in the BAC.
I am very pleased to communicate our goals for this year as we focus on opportunities for moving the chapter
forward.
- To support and encourage strategic and collaborative outreach to current GMU Black students.
- To develop membership strength in the areas of volunteerism, participation and gift giving.
- To create and promote opportunities for alumni fellowship and networking.
Let me reiterate, I am excited!
I honestly believe that WE can move the chapter and the association forward. Prove me right by your actions
during my presidency. I am looking forward to working with each of you.
Sincerely,
David C. Atkins, President, GMU Black Alumni Chapter
